Polyurethane foams are known for their excellent insulating properties and versatile applications. From cavity filling and sound insulation to making seat cushions and mattresses, PU foams are a popular choice because of their easy processing and light weight.

But did you know that these foams are also used in the artistic sector? Artists use PU foams to make masks that need to remain flexible and elastic. Discover how these unique materials cross the boundaries between art and science and open up new creative possibilities.

What are polyurethane foams?

Polyurethane, also known as PU - PUR, is a large group of polymers, which has a particularly wide range of applications. For example, they are often used as insulation materials.

Polyurethane foams are known for their high insulation R-value of 0.39. They are easy to process and are therefore mainly used for filling hollow spaces, sound insulation, seat cushions and mattresses.

What types of PU foams are there?

There are two types of foams:

  1. Soft or elastic foams: When these foams are formulated, an open cell structure is created. This keeps them flexible, making them ideal for cushions, mattresses and chair covers.
  2. Hard foams: When these foams are formulated, a hard foam with closed cells and with heat insulating properties is created. This type of foam is mainly used in the insulation of buildings, refrigerators, freezers, boats or floats.

When can you use PU foams?

PU foams are used in the artistic sector for making masks that may or may not need to remain hard or right highly elastic.

PU foams are easy to mix and expand considerably in volume according to the density chosen. Afterwards, the foam has small cells and is easy to work with a knife or sandpaper. The foam will react very quickly, allowing you to quickly continue working on it with polyester or epoxy.
